February 25, 2007 - Lars and I spent the morning at the
Great Sand Dunes and we visited Zapata Falls for the first time in our lives. Folks
... Zapata Falls is an amazing place!
The actual trail is only 0.5 miles long and ascends 400 feet. At the creek, much of the
water was frozen. To reach the actual falls, you need to walk up the creek just a bit into the tall slot canyon. Be prepared
to get wet, for you very well might need to wade in the creek during non-winter months. In the winter,
falling ice from above and a slippery frozen creek are two matters to use precaution about.
Inside the slot canyon, wow ... it's just an amazing natural wonder!
Zapata Falls is the tall waterfall to the right. My camera did not do justice to it!
As we headed back down the trail, I captured this view of the Great Sand Dunes and
Sangre De Cristo Mountains. The weather was fairly cloudy for
much of the day, but it is always worth visiting the dunes! :)
